Between September 2022 and September 2024, the Russian Federation carried out 25 massive missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, threatening its stability and integrity. In 2022, 11 attacks were recorded, in 2023 – five, and in 2024 – nine. In total, the aggressor fired more than 1,400 missiles of various types and 500 attack UAVs. During this period, Russia attacked the Ukrainian energy sector much more frequently, but the analysis covers only cases of massive attacks.
Among the missiles, the enemy used cruise missiles the most – about 1,200 units, of which 75% were shot down by Ukrainian air defense. As for drones, 98% of them are Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones. Ukrainian defense has eliminated approximately 90% of the drones used by the Russian Federation.
Attacks by Russian troops have caused significant damage to energy infrastructure, especially in the regions of Dnipro, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, and Kharkiv.
As a result of the occupation and attacks in 2022-2023, Ukraine’s power system lost almost 21 GW, and the attacks of 2024 destroyed another 9 GW.
