At the end of February, the Voice of America website and YouTube channel premiered a documentary about Jamala and the war in Ukraine, “Jamala: Songs of Freedom”. On March 4, the film was released in the United States and will also be available on documentary websites.
“These documentaries show what Ukrainians have been going through for two years. Here, the story of the beginning of the full-scale invasion by Russia, of these two years of losses, pain, suffering, expectations and uncertainty. But at the same time, this movie is about our desperate struggle for our freedom,” the singer wrote on her Facebook page.
The documentary Jamala: Songs of Freedom” by the Voice of America combines unique footage shot by journalists in Ukraine with personal archival videos of the singer taken on her phone during the first days of the war. The film explores Jamala’s thoughts and emotions, and documents the events and consequences of the war that has been going on in Ukraine for two years.
The film uses footage shot by American journalists in Bucha, Irpin, and Kyiv to give viewers a sense of the consequences of Russian aggression. The film also shows Jamala’s travels abroad: to Liverpool for the Eurovision Song Contest, to New York for the Global Citizens platform, the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C., and other places where she performed concerts and raised funds to help Ukraine.
“The fact that Jamala can meet with international audiences at concerts, with politicians, and speak in her own voice is really an asset to the world, to the democratic community of nations,” Orysia Lutsevych, director of the Ukrainian Forum at Chatham House, comments in the film.
Jamala is a singer and songwriter who won the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and received the Wiba 2022 award as one of the world’s most influential influencers. In 2023, she was named one of the top three most popular artists on Spotify’s Equal Global playlist.
